Religions (Pages 14-15)

KS2/KS3

  • Display a selection of non-fiction books about different religions. Alternatively, you could use the Internet for this activity. Put the pupils into small groups, each with a piece of A3 paper with one of the following written on it — Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism — or allow them to choose one of the religions on page 15 in the book. Give the pupils 15 minutes to look up and summarise, in no more than 10 sentences, the main beliefs, customs and festivals of their group’s religion. You could write the following questions on the board to help them get started:

What is the collective name for followers of this religion?

What is their place of worship called?

Name one or more festival and the time of year in which it usually occurs.

What is the religious leader of the community called?

Name the holy book (if applicable) or a key belief.

After 15 minutes ask the pupils to select a representative from their group who will present the religion they have researched to the rest of the class.

KS3

  • As a follow on activity, ask the pupils to use non-fiction books and the Internet to find out which parts of the world have a concentration of people of one particular religion. This could lead to a discussion about countries with a state religion.
